General and Children’s Dentistry at Our Sacramento Area Family Dentist Practice

Dr. Randy Davey and Dr. Wiggins believe that everyone should have a beautiful, healthy smile. The best way to achieve this is through regular dental checkups and cleanings, and proper oral hygiene. You do your part with regular flossing and brushing, but it is also important to visit your dentist regularly for checkups and routine cleanings to maintain the health and beauty of your smile and prevent cavities, gingivitis, and other dental problems. With regular checkups, our Carmichael, Roseville, and Sacramento area family dentist can diagnose and treat potential problems with your teeth and gums before they become severe. And if you do have a dental issue, Dr. Davey and Dr. Wiggins provide a full range of treatments — including tooth-colored fillings, inlays and onlays, air abrasion, Odyssey® gum treatment, extractions, and root-canal therapy — to help you achieve optimal dental health and beauty. Our caring dentist can provide expert dental care for your entire family, and his soothing manner and gentle touch will put even your youngest children at ease. Tooth-Colored Fillings

Tooth-colored fillings are an inconspicuous, safer alternative to traditional silver amalgam fillings. Tooth-colored fillings are made from a composite resin that is virtually indistinguishable from the natural tooth surface. In addition to providing an aesthetic solution for addressing cavities, tooth-colored fillings strengthen the teeth. If you have older silver amalgam fillings, we can replace them with the new composite fillings for a more natural look and improved tooth integrity. Aesthetics are not the only reason why an individual should have his or her amalgam fillings replaced. Silver amalgam fillings are composed of about 50 percent mercury, an element known to pose health risks. While research is inconclusive, there is a possibility that amalgam fillings can pose a risk to your health. Tooth-colored fillings are safe and nearly imperceptible to the casual observer, and they add strength as well as beauty to your smile. Inlays and Onlays

If decay or cracks have damaged your back teeth, inlays and onlays may be the solution for you. Inlays and onlays are made from porcelain, composite resin, and in some cases gold, although most patients choose tooth-colored inlays and onlays. For teeth that are not extensively damaged, inlays and onlays are an alternative to dental crowns, and they can be used to replace metal fillings.

Using the CEREC® system, an inlay can typically be placed in one visit. The dentist will first prepare the damaged tooth, then take detailed pictures of it. These images are then fed into the CEREC® three-dimensional imaging system, where the dentist custom designs each inlay. After this is complete, the CEREC® system shapes the new inlay in minutes, and the dentist places it onto the tooth. You may feel some tenderness in the treated area following the procedure, but there will be no downtime. It is possible to eat, participate in sports, or resume your normal life immediately after the treatment.

A dental onlay is very similar to an inlay, and is placed in much the same manner. Whereas an inlay is used to repair the cusp of an individual tooth, an onlay is used for multiple cusps in an affected area. As with the inlay procedure, our dentist uses the CEREC® system to create a virtual image of the tooth and to design and mill the onlay. After it is bonded into place, it will not only improve the health and beauty of your smile, but will also make the treated area stronger and less susceptible to further problems.

Tooth Extraction

When a tooth can’t be repaired because damage or decay is too extensive, it must be removed from the mouth. Tooth extraction is also performed on teeth that are preventing new teeth from coming in, teeth that are blocking the movement or reshaping of the mouth in an orthodontic procedure, and complications relating to wisdom teeth. Depending on the location of the tooth, a tooth extraction can be a relatively simple procedure. When a tooth is not easily accessed, a surgical procedure may be required. After the tooth is removed, it can be replaced with a dental bridge or, as a more permanent solution, with a dental implant.

Endodontics – Root Canal Treatment

Endodontic treatment involves treating the tooth pulp and surrounding tissues so that a tooth that would otherwise have to be extracted can be saved. The most common type of endodontic therapy is a root canal procedure. In a root canal, Dr. Davey and Dr. Wiggins remove the diseased or damaged dental pulp, cleans and shapes the root canals and pulp chamber, and seals the tooth, typically with a dental crown. In the past, a root canal was often a painful ordeal that patients dreaded. Now, however, the procedure can be performed quickly and with little discomfort. For our patients who are particularly anxious about undergoing a root canal, we can provide effective sedation dentistry solutions to make the procedure as worry free and comfortable as possible. Children’s Dentistry

The key to achieving a lifetime of healthy teeth is to start good dental habits at a very young age. We value children immensely, and we want to provide them with a good starting point from which they can maintain their oral health for the rest of their life. We take great satisfaction in watching our young patients grow up with each successive return to our office, and we are committed to ensuring that they have the knowledge necessary to maintain a beautiful and healthy smile throughout their childhood and into adulthood.

We understand that a trip to the dentist can be an especially trying experience for small children, so we do everything we can to provide them with a comfortable environment. Our Carmichael and Roseville area family dentist utilizes air abrasion technology to remove small areas of decay – no drills are required. We combine effective dental care with methods to prevent tooth decay, such as our sealant and fluoride treatments, to provide your children with everything they need to maintain healthy teeth for life.
